Frequently asked questions
Where do ingredients for Sensible Portions® products come from?
The Sensible Portions® brand purchases ingredients based on requirements designed to meet rigid specifications, food safety, and compliance with applicable regulations and certifications. We work with known suppliers who assure the quality and safety of their ingredients. Additionally, many of our food products receive independent certification from organic and Kosher certification third parties.
Our ingredients are predominantly sourced domestically, however it is sometimes necessary to source globally because some ingredients are not available domestically or the domestic sources are limited.
Are Sensible Portions® products non-GMO?
Many Sensible Portions® products are made with 100% non-GMO ingredients, and we continue to work towards using non-GMO ingredients in the products that are not yet made with non-GMO ingredients. For more information, please click here.
Are there artificial flavors or preservatives in Sensible Portions® products?
No. Sensible Portions® products do not use artificial flavors or preservatives.
Do Sensible Portions® products contain trans fats?
No. All of Sensible Portions® products are free of trans fats.
Do the dairy ingredients in Sensible Portions® products contain hormones?
No. The dairy ingredients in our products are derived from the milk of cows that are not administered growth hormones.
Are Sensible Portions® products gluten-free?
All of our products, except for our Apple Cinnamon Straws, Pita Crackers, and Pita Crisps, are gluten-free.
How does the Sensible Portions® brand define gluten-free?
We consider gluten to be in the following: barley, bulgur, couscous, durum, graham flour, kamut, malt, rye, semolina, spelt, triticale and any other types of wheat. We do not consider oat products to be gluten free due to the fact that studies are needed to determine the long- term safety of oat consumption. The issue of cross contamination with oat and wheat remains a concern in North America.
How can I determine if a Sensible Portions® product is gluten-free?
Sensible Portions® products that make a gluten-free claim on packaging will carry a red, triangular Gluten-Free symbol, be labeled gluten-free, or specify Gluten Free certification by GFCO.

Are Sensible Portions® products Kosher?
All of our products are certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union ("OU"). Our products' front of pack display a "U" enclosed within a circle to denote OU Kosher certification.
Do Sensible Portions® products contain peanuts or tree nuts?
While our products do not contain nut ingredients, we cannot guarantee that our facility is nut-free. Our manufacturing facilities follow rigid allergen control programs and good manufacturing practices to prevent products coming into contact with allergens. Your health care provider will be able to give you the best advice.
How does the Sensible Portions® brand control for allergens?
We employ strict manufacturing processes and procedures, and all of our manufacturing facilities follow rigid allergen control programs that include staff training, segregation of allergen ingredients, production scheduling, and thorough cleaning and sanitation.
Do Sensible Portions® products declare allergens in their labeling?
Sensible Portions® follows the U.S. FDA regulations and declares major allergens (peanuts, soybeans, milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, tree nuts, and wheat).
We recognize the serious nature of the allergen issue, and we strive to minimize risk. Both major and minor ingredients of all products, as well as all processing procedures and equipment, are closely scrutinized and all potential allergen issues are declared on our labeling.
How does the Sensible Portions® brand treat products that have potentially been in cross contact with food allergens?
To determine the risk of cross contact with a major food allergen, Sensible Portions® looks at the risk of each ingredient in the product, the risk of each ingredient in the facility, the equipment used in the facility, and the facility’s processes and procedures. If cross contact is likely, we place an allergen advisory statement on the label, such as, “contains milk” or “contains traces of milk,” or “may contain traces of milk.
What is the shelf life of your products?
Our Sensible Portions® products provide a "Best by" date code on packages. This is the date by which the product should be consumed.
How do I read the date code?
U.S. date codes are listed as day, month, year (DDMMMYY). For example, 09FEB16 stands for February 9, 2016. However, if you buy our products internationally, the date code will follow the standard date format in your specific country.
Can I use products after the "Best by" date?
We recommend consuming our products prior to the date indicated on the package. We cannot guarantee product quality after the "Best by" date.
